M. Esther is a very hardworking lady who owns and operates a retail shop. In fact, she has operated her shop for the past 8 years.

This is the 7th loan she has requested on behalf of her group, and she notes that her shop has been doing extremely well ever since she started receiving loans. More specifically, as a result of the prior loans, her shop is well-stocked with goods and thus attracts many customers because her customers know that they can find whatever they need at her shop. Accordingly, she has generated savings which has thereby enabled her to pay for her children's school fees, purchase cows (which produce milk for her family), and secure a plot of land. She is now seeking another loan to re-stock her shop with additional goods.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
