A loan helped buy drums of paint and thinner at wholesale.

Blanca Luz's story

Blanca, age 38, has been in the business of selling paints for 12 years. She and her sister began the business when they noticed that there weren't any businesses selling these kinds of goods in their area; neighbors had to go to distant parts of Bogotá to meet their paint supply needs.

Today, she sells not only paint, but also thinner, putty, sandpaper, vinyl, and brushes. They have managed to establish their neighbors as their principle clientele. Blanca sells on cash basis (vs credit) every day, from 8:00 in the morning until 6:00 in the evening. Her vendors bring merchandise to her store according to the orders Blanca has made. Her biggest customers are auto body shops and construction firms.

Her goal is to be able to fill greater volume contracts so that she can get better discounts and greater variety in her merchandise. Ultimately, she wants to buy her own house. Her greatest challenge is increasing the volume of her sales.

She is currently applying for her first loan through Kiva, which she is making through Fundación Mario Santo Domingo. She will use it to buy paint in drums and thinner in large-size buckets. This will help her to reach her reach her goal of buying at wholesale at a discount and enable her to pass on the savings and increase her competitiveness.
