Sok's Group
In this Group: Sok, Pok, Sek, Sum, Srey
Mrs. Sok R., is the leader of the five-member group; all the borrowers live in Svay Dongkom Commune of Siem Reap Province.

Mrs. Sok R. is a 58-year-old widow. She sells lotus flowers for ceremonies. She travels to find the lotus flowers in the ponds far away from her home. She has been running her business for a long time ago. She is responsible for three children; two of them are single and one is widowed. All of her children live with her in the family home. Her widow-child works with her selling lotus flowers. To make the business and family's transportation easier, Sok R. requests a loan to purchase a motorcycle. The loan will help her reduce her business expenses.

The other four borrowers are:

  • Pok C., 40, and a widow. She sells different kinds of flowers and requests a loan to purchase more flowers to sell.
  • Sek S., 44, raises pigs at home and sells flowers. She requests a loan to buy flowers to sell.
  • Sum T. is 40 years old. He is a local construction worker, who requests a loan to buy house repairing. (T.'s wife appears in the photo in his place.)
  • Srey P. is 34 years old and a widow. She sells groceries and she requests a loan to purchase more groceries to sell.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
