Patricia B. is a forty five year old married woman. She has given birth to four children, two boys and two girls. Currently, all her children are in school. Patricia and her family live in Nkawkaw, a town in the Eastern Region of Ghana. Nkawkaw is a business community. Her husband owns a provisions shop in the community they live in. She cooks food and sells it to the local people and with the profit supports her husband with taking care of the family. She sells ‘ampesi’ (stew with yam slices) to the school pupils on the local school grounds during the day. She also sells in the evenings from her home. She procures most of her stock from the surrounding villages where prices are quite reasonable. The ‘yam ampesi’ is served hot with stew. Patricia has been in business for eighteen years and she is requesting a loan to buy food items in bulk.
