A loan of $600 helped purchase cattle and fodder.

Mahmud's story

Mahmud lives in Penjikent, Tajikistan. He is 43 years old, married, and has one son. Mahmud is the sole provider for his family and earns his living by raising and selling livestock. Every year he purchases young calves from local villagers, raises them for 8-9 months, and then sells the adult cows and bulls to local butchers. Today Mahmud is thinking about expanding his business, because his current earnings are not enough to provide for his family. He wants to purchase more calves and fodder. That’s why he is requesting a loan of 2000 Somoni ($600 USD) for the term of 12 months. Extend your solidarity to Mahmud so that he can move forth successfully and accomplish all his goals.

More about Tajikistan and IMON International

Tajikistan is perhaps best known for its rich history, which includes a key location along the Silk Road; the end of Alexander the Great's rule; and many great thinkers, philosophers, scientists and poets such as Rudaki, Ibn Sina (Avicenna), Firdousi, Omar Haiyam, Jomi, Mavlavi Rumi, and many others. The country is home to communities that still speak the ancient Sogdian language and a civilization that dates back to the 4th millennium BC. Even today, Tajikistan is a complex mixture of the Islamic faith, Soviet culture, New Western culture, and Central Asian traditions.

Tajikistan is also the poorest of the former Soviet republics. The civil war, which ignited soon after its independence from the U.S.S.R., further damaged the already weak economy. In addition, 93 percent of the country is mountainous and only 7 percent of the land is arable. These conditions have resulted in high levels of unemployment and have forced hundreds of thousands to seek work in other countries, mainly Russia. While the people of Tajikistan are working to improve ittheirs agricultural production and manufacturing sector, nearly two-thirds of the population still live in abject poverty.
