Celia Monserrate's story

The members of the communal bank “Crucita” meet in Crucita, a village in the Portoviejo canton. This place is known for its beautiful beaches, popular with local and foreign tourists. The village is commonly called “Crucita la Bella” [Crucita the Beautiful].

This is where Celia lives. She is 54 year old and lives in a common-law marriage. She has five children who are adults now; two of them live with her. Her husband is a fisherman. Celia works as a housewife and requests these loans on behalf of her husband, so that he can use them to work. He sells the fish the sea gives him, and she comes to the communal bank’s meetings, since her husband is usually busy fishing. He works every day helped by some of their children. They leave in the afternoon and come back the next day in the morning, when those in charge of distributing the fish to the city markets come to his boat. He has been in this business almost his whole life.

With this loan, they will buy fuel, nets and other fishing supplies. Celia has been a member of this communal bank for more than eight years. She enjoys being a member because these loans help her a lot. Her dream is to give her family the best things.
