A loan of $1,900 helped a member to expand her poultry business.

Silver & Gold Group's story

Clara started her poultry business in 2012. After working as a volunteer counselor with Childline Zimbabwe, as a token of appreciation, World Education funded her to start a project and she thought of chicken rearing. In 2013, when she was on the third batch, her birds were affected by Newcastle - a serious poultry disease. A friend in her group (also doing poultry business) advised her to take the birds to the Veterinary Department. She then got help on how to treat various diseases that affects chickens. The business bloomed and she managed to save money for buying a residential stand in Dzvivarasekwa, Harare. With the Kiva loan, Clara will be able to build another fowl run to have more birds reared at her place. She also hopes the in future she will be able to keep chicken layers as well as broilers. Clara and her friends formed the Silver and Gold group. Most of the members in the group keep poultry and they help each other to market their chicken as well as bringing them up. The group continually attends training offered at Thrive and this has since helped then to prepare budget in the business before spending the money.
