A loan of $600 helped to buy three calves to fatten and sell at a better price.

Vilma's story

Vilma, a small producer, earns her daily bread through her own efforts. She lives in the rural zone of Santo Domingo, Chontales. Her spouse, who has a great deal of experience in agriculture, helps her with household expenses, as they are a very united family. Her son is a minor and goes to primary school. For the first time, Vilma is turning to Afodenic to request a loan through Kiva. She will buy three calves at reasonable prices in order to fatten them and then sell them at a better price, trying to earn income and improve her quality of life. Vilma explains that the little bit that she earns is not enough to make this investment. This activity is a way of taking a risk in life in order to get ahead; for her it is her main source of income. The milk that she sells only allows her to pay for some pasture clearing and to buy food, so buying cattle and selling them for more money will allow her to make a good investment and increase her income, which would be very beneficial for her family.
