Sergei works as a contract border guard in his hometown of Beregovo. He lives with his wife and one-year-old daughter in a two-room apartment in a five-story building. As these buildings are old, the whitewashing has long since chipped off the walls. Sergei has long been thinking about somehow improving his family's living conditions and making their residence more comfortable for his family to live in. Sergei wants to do a small renovation, namely whitewashing the walls in the kitchen, hallway and in the rooms. He needs 20,000 hryvnia (UAH) for this project.

About HOPE Ukraine

HOPE International, a Christian faith-based non-profit organization, has been operating in Ukraine since 1997. HOPE Ukraine was the organization’s first international venture. In addition to its core microfinance activities, HOPE also supports an active children's ministry in Ukraine in the form of “Tomorrow Clubs,” after-school programs that teach children the gospel through games, skits and songs.

About Housing Loans

Many poor families cannot afford housing that meets their needs. When you make a housing loan on Kiva, you give people access to flexible capital to obtain or improve their homes. Better housing means better health, sanitation, and even educational outcomes for children. A house can also be much more for entrepreneurs who run businesses out of their homes. In this way, housing and small business loans on Kiva share a common purpose: to alleviate poverty and enable families to enjoy more stable lives.
