Balimaya Group's story

The Balimaya group consists of married women who on average are 37 years old with two children. They all live in traditional families in the town of Fana in the Dioïla district, which is part of the Koulikoro region (second administrative region of the Republic of Mali). They met through kinship, neighborhood ties and friendship. They sell food preparations, condiments, soap and various items. The Balimaya group of women are on their ninth group loan. To meet their customers' huge demand, they seek assistance from Soro Yiriwaso. Mamou, the person who is kneeling, is illiterate and currently sells various items. She intends to buy cartons of ear-rings, necklaces and rings from wholesalers in Bamako. Retail sales are conducted for cash, at her home and sometimes as an itinerant vendor, to a mixed clientele. She expects to achieve monthly profits of 45,000 CFA francs, which will be reinvested in her business.
