A loan of $1,150 helped a member buy agricultural inputs and seeds, and pay for plowing and weeding.

Benkadi Iii Group's story

The Benkadi III group consists of ten married women who on average are 32 years old with five children, all living in polygamous families in Sirakoro, one of the villages of Bougouni in the third administrative region of Mali.

They have been working with the Soro Yiriwaso micro-finance institution in carrying out their winter farming activities. They are on their third loan with the institution, and past loans were fully reimbursed.

The selected crop is rice featuring Amine, the first woman standing from right to left in the photo. With her loan, she will buy agricultural inputs and seeds, and pay for plowing and weeding to maintain 1.5 hectares (about 3.7 acres).

After the harvest the production will be sold in the village market to a clientele composed of men and women.

She expects to make a profit of 35,000 CFA francs per growing season. This profit will enable her to repay the loan and help her husband with daily household expenses.
