A loan of $475 helped to obtain a water pump for irrigation.

Charles's story

Charles, 55, is a farmer in Chibombo, Zambia where he lives with his wife and 6 children. He is asking for a loan so that he can obtain a water pump that will help him irrigate and expand his garden.

Vegetable gardening is big business for many rural farmers in Chibombo district. Charles grows vegetables on his small farm to sell at one of the roadside markets. Last season he grew tomatoes, watermelons and fresh maize. With the profits he was able to pay the school fees for his children and invest in livestock.

Because it is the dry season in Zambia, water needs to be applied to the crops regularly, often brought to the garden by buckets from a nearby well or stream. A water pump would significantly reduce Charles need for labor and allow him to further expand his gardens.

Rent to Own has worked with Charles on a business plan for this gardening season and will deliver a water pump directly to his farm. Rent to Own also provides Charles with training on how to properly use and maintain the water pump, and will check in to provide support until he has paid off the loan.
