A loan of $225 helped to purchase high-quality inputs in order to double yield and income.

Yusuf Rabo's story

Yusuf Rabo is a 51-year-old farmer from Rafin Tabo. As a Babban Gona member, Yusuf Rabo is excited about the opportunity to finally have access to credit, good markets and a trained agronomist. Like all Babban Gona members, Yusuf Rabo can earn up to $2000/ha this season from growing maize, more than three times the average Nigerian farmer’s annual income. The average Babban Gona farmer yields 30 bags/hectare, double the national average of 14. However, Yusuf Rabo is ambitious and is aiming to reap a total of 80 bags on his 1.50ha this season due to the high quality inputs he will obtain with this loan. When asked how he plans to spend the money he will make from selling his produce, he said, “I plan to use the money to educate my children; Ezekel, Saminu, and Danjuma. My overall goal is to become the most profitable farmer in my community”. With this loan, he is well on his way to achieving these goals.
