A loan of $5,475 helped to pay for new employees to help expand his business.

Max Weisner's story

“I have always had an affinity for engineering—it runs in my family,” said Max, owner of Starks Engineering Consultants Inc.

Max’s mother was the executive director for the Committee to Increase Minority Professionals in Engineering, Architecture and Technology in Orlando, Florida. At the age of 15, he began working for engineering firms and was eventually gifted a civil engineering scholarship to Howard University.

“Engineering is something that comes naturally to me—it is what has led me to own my own business. I am so grateful for my mother encouraging me to succeed,” Max said.

Max originally started his business in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania just five years ago. From 2009 to 2013 he developed great relationships with companies and his civil engineering partner in San Antonio, Texas. In 2014, he made the move to San Antonio. Starks Engineering Consultants Inc.’s essential functions are program management and construction management. When Max told his colleagues about his plans to expand, they referred him to Accion Texas Inc., a nonprofit, multi-state and small business lender, for a loan. Because of Accion Texas, Max has begun the process of hiring more staff members to help successfully grow his business.

“It has been such a blessing to be in San Antonio. My ultimate dream is to have clients like the San Antonio International Airport and CPS Energy,” Max said.
