A loan of $1,500 helped to buy a yoke and a pair of oxen to till the land.

Miguel De Jesús's story

Miguel is 31 years old and studied only up to the third form because his family was very poor, which made it difficult to stay in school. He is married, and his wife helps him with the farm. They have two children, aged 9 and 7, and Miguel's father lives with the family. Miguel started being a farmer at very tender age and learned the trade from his father. He explains that, since he was the eldest of five sons, it was his lot to work very hard, but he now thanks his father for teaching him everything, otherwise he could never have supported his family. Miguel starts working at 4.30 am. He prepares his tools, then walks 25 minutes to work, works for about six hours, and comes back in the afternoon to tend to his vegetable plot. He asks Credicampo for a loan in order to buy a yoke and a pair of oxen to till the land. He dreams of seeing his sons through university and hopes the youngest will become a professional football player. He would also like to buy a brick house, since their current house is made of metal sheets. He intends to repay his loan so as not be burdened by debt.
