A loan of $275 helped to purchase more cooking oil, rice and seasoning to expand her business.

Mariatu's story

Meet 30-year-old Mariatu from Tombo western rural area in Freetown. She is married with one child. Mariatu sells “cookery” beside a busy road. "Cookery” is a modest term for the wealth of spicy stews that are cooked by local people and served with rice. The building blocks of such stews are palm oil, cassava leaf, rice, green chillis, seasoning (like maggi or red pepper) and chicken or fish.

Mariatu established her cookery business some years ago as she wants to sustain her family. She works at the business from morning until night, seven days a week. She says that the main challenge to her business is that sales are very slow during the rainy season.

Mariatu requires a loan in order to purchase more cooking oil, rice and seasoning to expand her business. She hopes that the extra income from this loan will allow her to improve her standard of living and increase her business. In the future, Mariatu plans to expand her business to a higher level. She thanks you for your support.
