A loan of $175 helped to purchase more cooking oil, rice and cooking seasonings expand her business.

Gbassay's story

Meet 35-year-old Gbassay from Jui, western rural area in Freetown. She is married with seven children. Gbassay sells “cookery” beside a busy road. "Cookery” is a modest term for the wealth of spicy stews that are cooked by local people and served with rice. The building blocks of such stews are palm oil, cassava leaf, rice, green chilis, seasoning (like maggi or red pepper) and chicken or fish.

For more than seven years, Gbassay has established her cookery business. She began her business because she wanted to sustain her family. She works at the business from morning until night, seven days per week. She says that the main challenge to her business is during the rainy season, sales are very slow.

Gbassay requires a loan in order to purchase more cooking oil, rice and cooking seasonings to expand her business. She hopes that the extra income from this loan will allow her to improve her standard of living and increase her business. In the future, Gbassay plans to expand her business to the higher level. She thanks you for your support.
