Khamtah's story

Mr. Khamtah is 60 years old and has a wife and six children. Mr. Khamtah works very hard to provide for his family – he is a sticky rice farmer and raises some livestock in addition to selling water filters. Mr. Khamtah’s village uses surface water, well water, and rain water but the water is unsuitable to drink. The nearby villages use similar water sources but, like his own village, the water in these places is contaminated with bacteria and other water spread disease. Most families report a threefold reduction in diarrhea after they begin using the filter that is because the filter removes bacteria and other water borne diseases. Mr. Khamtah is expecting to sell approximately 5 filters each month; providing clean water to an average of 30 people per month. He will make a small commission from the sale of each water filter; the commission helps him support his extended family. Mr. Khamtah is encouraged by how the filter helps provide clean water, assist villagers improve their overall health, and how it helps provide additional income for him, his wife, and family members.
