A loan of $725 helped a member to buy fertilizer, herbicide, and to pay for labor costs.

Benkadi 3 Group's story

The seven members of the Benkadi 3 Group are married women with an average age of 40. They have an average of 6 children and live for the most part in traditional families in the village of Niaradougou in the commune of Danderesso in the area of Sikasso, the third largest administrative region in Mali. The women work with the Soro Yiriwaso micro-finance organization to carry out their agricultural businesses during the rainy season. They are on their fifth loan; the previous loans were fully repaid. Ms. Safiatou, the person standing at the very right of the photo, grows rice. With her loan, she plans to buy two 50-kg bags of fertilizer, one container of herbicide, and to pay for the labor cost of maintaining .5 hectares of land. After the harvest, the output will be sold at the village level in Sikasso to a clientele of men and women, for cash and credit. She plans to earn an average profit of 74,000 FCFA per season. This profit will enable her to repay her loan and the interest, as well as help her husband with the daily expenses of their family.
