Rokia's story

Madame Rokia Traoré is 43 years old, married, and the mother of seven. She lives in a traditional extended family with her husband, her co-wives, and their children in the Koulikoro district of Koutiala Prefecture (third administrative region of the Republic of Mali). From an early age, she got interested in income-generating work, notably commerce. It was her husband who gave her the idea to specialize in buying and selling fruit, which she has been doing for twenty years.

Ms. Traoré is on her second individual loan after having correctly repaid four solidarity loans (group loans). With this loan, she intends to buy 10 baskets of bananas, 30 sacks of oranges, and other fruit from peasant producers of Sikasso. She makes her sales at the grand marketplace of Koutiala, cash or credit accepted, to customers composed of women and men.

Her intention is to realize a profit of 70,000 francs CFA per month that she envisions using to cover the loan interest and to assist her husband with covering the costs of schooling the children. She wishes to receive information on the techniques of preserving fruits and vegetables in order to make her enterprise more profitable.
