A loan of $775 helped to build an enclosed toilet.

Martha Isabel's story

“A close family produces strength,” is the motto of Martha and her family. For generations, her family has been producing and selling handicrafts on the street corners of Masaya and from their home. At age 51, Martha is a single mother of two children (ages 20 and 17) who are under her charge. She has only a primary school education because her financial situation did not allow her to continue. As a result, she had to contribute to the family business. She has now been in this line of work for 24 years and it is her only source of income. Martha receives help from her brother and her daughter.

Martha lives in a peri-urban area where most of the houses have bathrooms that are located on the patios. The walls are plastic and there is no roof. At the same time, many families use latrines, which have the same characteristics as bathrooms, but used in place of toilets. Martha’s elderly mother has a difficult time walking, so she would find it complicated to use this type of facility. For this reason, Martha is requesting a loan in order to build an enclosed toilet, which would pose less physical and health risks.

In the future, Martha plans to request another loan so that she can continue expanding and remodeling her home.
