Fighting for a better future? We need your help.

Creating a more equitable world takes a lot of time and energy, but at Kiva we’re in it for the long haul. 100% of money lent on Kiva goes to funding loans. That means we rely on donations from people like you to make this work possible. For a limited time, if you donate $35 or more, a $25 bonus will be added to your account (you’ll get an email once it’s there).

A loan of $1,500 helped to buy a refrigerator and to buy a bag of manure that she needs to fertilize the crop.

María Julia's story

Maria is 61 years old. She went to school up until third grade. She wanted to be a professional, but in those days parents only wanted their children to learn how to work. She is a widow but has found someone to rebuild her life with. She has 6 children but only 4 live at home.

Maria makes a living in agriculture with her current life partner, but she also makes frozen juice drinks and sells other things for which she needs to have a refrigerator. She has been making a living doing this for two years now. One of her daughters works with her, and she sells from 6am to 7pm.

She needs the loan to buy a refrigerator, and she will buy a bag of manure which she needs to fertilize the crop.

Her dreams are for God to grant her a long life and for him to keep her children and her current life partner healthy. She dreams of one day having a general store to generate more income for her home and always have a means of support.
