A loan of $3,075 helped to obtain a maize milling machine.

Jonathan's story

Jonathan is a shop owner in the town of Nyimba, Zambia. He is requesting a loan for a maize mill to provide a maize milling service to over 600 families in his community.

The maize milling machine takes raw maize (corn) and creates a maize flour which is the staple food in Zambia. Most rural families in Nyimba District grow maize on their small farms and store it and use it as their primary supply of food for the year. After the kernels are removed from the cob, they then have to be milled to create flour, which can then be boiled to make what is locally called Nshima. Jonathan is already operating a maize milling service, which employs three community members, and is looking to add a second machine so that he can keep up with the demand for his service.

Rent-to-Own has done market research in Jonathan’s community and has determined that the location for this equipment is ideal. He is one of the main operators of a maize mill in town and a large number of families are already using his service. However, such a high demand for his service means that people must wait in long cues. A second machine will build on his current business and allow him to serve more members of his community.

Once he secures a loan, Jonathan will be able to get a maize mill from Rent-to-Own, which will deliver the equipment to his place of business, as well as provide him with additional training on how to use and maintain it.

Jonathan hopes that he will be able to process his client’s maize much faster with this additional milling machine. This loan will assist in turning Jonathan’s business into a prosperous rural enterprise.
