A loan of $3,600 helped a member purchase coca in bulk.

29 De Mayo Group's story

The communal bank, "29 de Mayo" is entering its first cycle in Pro Mujer as part of its Senkata regional office. The group is made up of eight members and it is led by a board of directors on which Steffi is the president. The businesses that the members of the communal bank have are varied and include clothing sales, glove sales, sewing hats, baby clothing sales, backpack sales, ice cream sales and coca sales.

The loan that they are requesting will benefit small business where Steffi is a member. She states that this is the first time that she takes part in Pro Mujer, joining after receiving an invitation from a client of the institution. Currently, she has a business selling coca. She states that she started the business many years ago because since she was little, she helped her family sell this product. She comments that the product is requested in the Alteño market for akullicu (chewing of coca leaves).

The loan that she is seeking will be used to increase her capital (purchase coca in bulk) that she will acquire in the markets in the city of La Paz and later sell in her retail space. This line of work allows her to earn an income to support her family since she is single and lives with her parents. When asked what she likes about Pro Mujer, she says that she enjoys the health center, the loans and the trainings offered by the institution.
