Mtumwa's story

Mtumwa is 44 years old, married, and has four children, aged 14, 16, 18, and 20.

Mtumwa K. has been selling kangas and pots in the Mikunguni neighborhood of Zanzibar for six years. Kanga is a common local fabric used for dress, household needs, and baby slings. It is brightly colored and usually contains an elaborate pattern and a Swahili adage on the bottom.

Mtumwa works from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. every day and earns a profit of approximately $70 each month. She previously took out her first loan from BRAC Tanzania, which she repaid successfully and on time. She is requesting her second loan ($250.00) so that she can buy more inventory for her shop.
