10 De Diciembre (Portoviejo) Group's story

In the area called Estancia Vieja in Colon Parish of the city of Portoviejo the members of the "10 de Diciembre" communal bank get together every fortnight. This place has humble people who work in agriculture and commerce in general. They decided to get together to be able to access the benefits offered by the institution and through the loans improve their businesses.

One of the members is Antonia who is 33 years old and is in a common-law relationship. She has 4 children from this relationship aged 9, 14, 15 and 17. The three oldest study in secondary school while the youngest is in Primary school. Her husband is a farmer.

Antonia is a hard-working woman who has always strove to get ahead through her own efforts. She helps her husband with her earnings. She is in charge of the canteen at the local school. From Monday to Friday she prepares all kinds of healthy foods and also fruit juices which are nutritious for the children who consume her products daily. She has been doing this for two years. The loan is to purchase fruits and foods necessary to prepare the meals.

This is the second cycle for this communal bank and they like it as the loans are very helpful for all the group. Their dreams are to provide better education for their children.
