B.vengnom Group's story

These hard-working tribal women joined hands to support themselves through loans facilities. They live in the outskirt town of Churachandpur, Manipur, which is located in the northeastern part of India. Nenglam, pictured with a raised hand, is the featured profile member. She is 38 years old and is still single. She has six younger siblings, and all of them are married. She takes care of her mother and younger brother’s family and lives with them since her father abandoned her mother for another woman. Due to health complications, her brother does not work; only she and her sister-in-law earn and support the family. In spite of her difficulties, she is determined and happy that she could at least sustain the family and send her niece and nephews to school. Nenglam’s source of income is brewing local wine and selling it for a profit. In order to supplement her income, every night before going to bed, she weaves clothes to sell. She is thankful to her sister-in-law for helping her in the weaving business. With the income she gets from the business, she pays her brother’s children's school fees and manages the household expenditures. Nenglam wants to avail a loan to buy mini solar home lighting of 45 watts for 1,2173 INR to be install in her house so that she can extend her business hours in the evening and night. It is very difficult to weave at night without proper lighting. She believes that this solar home light will make a great impact in her business. Likewise, the rest of the group members requested a solar loan to improve upon their respective income-generating activities, which also include weaving, variety store and agriculture.
