A loan of $425 helped a member to buy food ingredients for resale.

Bendiya Group's story

The Bendiya Group is part of the Danaya Association in Bamananking, a district of Ouelessebougou. The women, who are members of the group, know one another through family and local ties. They are, on average, 51 years old and have three children. All the women are married and live in large, traditional families in Ouelessebougou, in the Kati prefecture (Koulikoro Region, Republic of Mali).

The women have all been operating as retailers for several years and are much sought after for their products, tomatoes, onions, pepper and cabbages. In order to respond to the growing demands of their customers, the group began working with the field partner, Soro Yiriwaso, two years ago. This will be their fourth group loan.

Kadiatou (sitting on the far right in the photo) is the group president and sells food ingredients. She is very well-known in Ouelessebougou and is an excellent saleswoman. She plans to use her loan to buy a large quantity of food products (tomatoes, onions, pepper, aubergines and cabbages). She buys her supplies from wholesalers in Ouelessebougou, and resells them in the same town. She sells on a cash or credit basis to various customers.

Kadiatou hopes to make a monthly profit of 20,000 francs CFA which will enable her to repay her loan and reinvest in her food business.
