Safina Birungi's Group's story

Safina is a leader of 4 members of a group. She is a 54-year-old widowed woman with 6 children, aged between 38 and 21. None of her children go to school. Safina also takes care of 4 grandchildren. She resides in and owns a 2-room house, where she is staying with 6 people. They don’t have electricity but have piped water at home.

The family gets one meal a day. She resides and works in a semi-urban area that is on the outskirts of Kampala. Safina operates a retail shop in Kyebando Nsooba, one of the city suburbs, and buys her products from Bwaise. Safina uses public transport to go back and forth to her business. She sells to all categories of people, and her monthly expenses include school fees, medication, rent, and food for the family.

Safina works 6 days a week and has been with MCDT for 6 years, servicing her thirteenth loan. She wants to use this loan to expand her business and aspires to sell wholesale.
