Lukia is a leader of 5 members of a group. She is a 46-year-old married woman with 5 children, aged between 29 and 21. Three of her children go to school. Lukia doesn’t take care of any additional family members. She is a very responsible member within her group. She resides in and owns a 3-room house, where she is staying with 4 people. They have electricity but no piped water at home.

The family gets 3 meals a day. She resides and works in a semi-urban area that is on the outskirts of Kampala. Lukia sells bricks at her home. She buys these blocks from different areas and uses a lorry to bring them to her home. She sells to all categories of people, both wholesale and retail.

Her main challenges are water, thieves, and defaulters. Lukia works 7 days a week and has been with MCDT for 9 years, servicing her eighteenth loan. She wants to use this loan to expand her business and aspires to build rental rooms.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
