A loan of $175 helped to pay for clean and affordable clean cooking energy from Liquefied Petroleum Gas.

Florence's story

Florence is 44 years of age and a mother of three. She was divorced three years ago and now lives as a single mother. She solely takes care of her children. She has been using charcoal as her main kitchen energy but every day when she leaves her children at home, she is afraid that her children could one day either burn themselves or burn her home. Other alternative energies such as kerosene or electricity are either dirty or very expensive to use in her circumstances.

With the way of life in Uganda, there are not many alternatives for cooking energy. Firewood would be another cost effective and affordable energy but it is not as common as it used to be in the past. Recently, Florence was introduced to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) as a clean and efficient cooking energy. She liked the benefits of gas over charcoal. Unfortunately, the cost of acquiring it is very high and as a single mum, she is not in a position to afford it in a single payment.

A Kiva loan offers a solution to the dilemma Florence faced if she was to pay cash for the package. She is delighted that she will be able to go to work with less worries than before.
