A loan of $125 helped to pay for affordable and effficient cooking energy from Liquefied Petroleum Gas.

Gorret's story

Gorret is a nurse at a local hospital. She is married and has a family of five people. The main energy used for cooking is charcoal and sometimes they use firewood for cooking her husband's traditional food. Due to the difficulty of lighting a charcoal stove in the morning and late in the evening. Gorret has convinced her husband to get Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). LPG is clean, efficient and affordable unlike charcoal, which sometimes costs a lot of money but most of the heat is not used well. Gorret wished in the past to acquire LPG. Unfortunately, this was not possible due to the initial money required to pay for it. LPG is quite expensive initially but in the long run it is affordable when compared to charcoal or firewood. LPG is also advantageous over charcoal because of its clean credentials. In order for Gorret to pay for LPG, she requires a loan. However, most local microfinance institutions require security to lend such money. But with a Kiva loan, Gorret will use her place of work to guarantee her loan. She is very grateful for the arrangement and she is convinced that LPG will help her and her family to get to work very early unlike in the past when her work was affected due to her late arrival.
