Santos Sergio
Santos is 37 years old and is a small producer of coffee who lives in a community in the north of Nicaragua. He lives with his wife and 3 children on a farm of 4.2 hectares, 1.8 hectares are devoted to coffee. He grows it following the Fair Trade criteria.

Santos explains that in the past few years his coffee production has gone from 10 to 17 quintals of parchment coffee. He expects to increase these yields in the future. To achieve this goal he is requesting a loan which will permit him to buy the inputs and fertilizers that his plantation need to get a better harvest. His desire is to increase his income and provide his family with better conditions in the future.

Santos tiene 37 años y es un pequeño productor de café que vive en una comunidad al norte de Nicaragua. Vive con su esposa y sus 3 hijos en una finca de 4.2 hectáreas, de las cuales 1.8 ha destinado para el cultivo de café, el cual maneja bajo los criterios de certificación de Comercio Justo.

Don Santos explica que en los últimos años la producción de su café ha pasado de 10 a 17 quintales oro, pero que su expectativa para el futuro es mejorar los rendimientos. Para lograr esta meta, él está solicitando un crédito que le permita comprar los insumos y fertilizantes que requiere su plantación, y lograr así una mejor cosecha. Su deseo es aumentar sus ingresos y con ello poder brindar a su familia mejores condiciones para su futuro.

This loan is part of PAC's effort to help farmers expand their existing crop yields and increase their incomes. Coffee production loans help farmers increase their crop yields by enabling them pay to clean, prune, fertilize, and conserve their fields, deliver water, and replant trees needed to shade coffee plants. Farmers working with PAC also receive technical assistance and commercial services, as well as access to Fair Trade and organic certifications and international markets.

About PAC

PAC (Association for People in Community Action) is a community development organization in Nicaragua that offers clients loans, technical assistance and access to markets. Founded in 1996, it’s a joint initiative between World Relief Nicaragua and local farmers. PAC believes that increased agricultural production and improved technology can bring economic development to high poverty zones.

Some loans from PAC are disbursed in partial payments over a period of four to six months depending on the needs of the borrower. The borrower will not be charged interest on any funds that have not yet been disbursed. If the borrower decides not to use the entire loan amount, the unused portion will be returned to lenders in the form of a pre-payment.
