A loan of $1,150 helped to buy more stock of lamps and stoves.

Susan's story

Susan is a mother of two girls, one in high school and the other in primary school.

She is an entrepreneur selling electronics to sustain her family. Being a member of one of our groups, she has been on the forefront of promoting solar energy through educating other women and referring them to the Visionary Empowerment Programme for purchases. To empower, her we have advanced her KES 100,000 to stock her shop with a variety of solar lamps and improved cook stoves that she can sell to make a profit and grow her business. This will make the lamps even more accessible to the clients who will no longer need to pay transport to come collect the lamps from our storage.

From the lamps she will make a profit margin of between KES 200 for lamps and KES 700 for improved cook stoves and this will enable her to repay the loan as well as use some money to grow the business.

Being a very influential person in the community, she will be able to reach masses as she plans to hold demonstrations in the evenings when it's dark, which will help create more awareness and sell the products. In addition, it will also help increase the confidence in the solar lamps which have passed the Lighting Africa standards test of quality. Our motive is that by empowering her, we will have reached more people and hence empowered them in energy saving.
