A loan of $1,200 helped to buy more rice, sugar, cooking oil, posho, beans, bread, sodas, juice and other items.

Hellen's story

Hellen is 46 years old and lives in the town of Mbale in the Mbale region of Uganda. She is married and has three children who are all currently in school. For the past ten years, Hellen has been working hard to manage her retail shop, which sells rice, sugar, cooking oil, posho, beans, bread, sodas, juice and other items.

To help expand her business, Hellen has requested a loan of 3,000,000 Ugandan shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more rice, sugar, cooking oil, posho, beans, bread, sodas, juice and other items, and will help Hellen to generate greater profits and increase her capital. Hellen hopes that in the future she will be able to have more business outlets.

Hellen is a member of BRAC's Small Enterprise Program (SEP). The program primarily serves small entrepreneurs like Hellen who do not have enough collateral for commercial loans, but have businesses that have grown too large for microloans.
