A loan of $3,850 helped a member to buy cloth.

Zhidmad (Gualaceo) Group's story

The credit group Zhidmad is made up of 10 women who live in the Parish of Gualaceo which is in the Canton of the same name. The people who live there typically work in farming and raising livestock, weaving hats from straw, making woolen sweaters, and embroidering skirts and blouses. Everyone still maintains the culture and traditions of their villages.

One of the members of this group is Rosa. During the ten years she has been a member she has developed close friendships with all her fellow members. She likes this group because they support each other and help each other get ahead. Rosa is 36 years old and is the single mother of four children who are 16, 14, 9, and 7 years old. The eldest one works and helps with the expenses; the second one is in secondary school, and the two younger ones go to a little neighborhood school. The house in which Rosa lives belongs to her.

Rosa devotes her time to farm work such as raising chickens, guinea pigs, and pigs, and also to agriculture. Her family eats what she produces, and they sell the rest. But she spends the majority of her time making guaipes (cleaning cloths). The money from her loan is for the purchase of cloth to make guaipes. Her goals are to add on to her house, and for her children to study and become professionals.

The small picture is of a member who was unable to be there when the group picture was taken.
