A loan of $850 helped purchase of charcoal and firewood.

Aïssa's story

Aïssa G. is 33 years old and lives with her husband and two children in a traditional family in the Bagadadji neighborhood of the town of Ségou (Fourth Administrative Region, Mali). In addition to her regular job as a government-employed teacher, Aïssa engages in some income-generating activities. She learnt her craft from her mother, an excellent business woman, well-known throughout Ségou. Aïssa has managed to reconcile her professional endeavors with her commercial activities, the buying and selling of charcoal and firewood.

In the past four years of her business relationship with Soro Yiriwaso, Aïssa has been the recipient of four group loans and one individual loan, all duly repaid. This would be her second individual loan, and she intends to use it to purchase 200 bags of charcoal and one truckload of firewood. Normally, she buys her merchandise from recognized professionals, rural people in surrounding villages (Bananida, Konobougou for example), and sometimes in Ségou itself.

Aïssa G. sells out of her home, on a cash or credit basis, to a clientele consisting of housewives and bakers. She takes orders and delivers to their place of work. She hopes to earn a monthly profit of $83 (40,000 West African frances), which would enable her to discharge her family responsibilities and to put money back into the business.
