A loan of $1,050 helped to buy firewood.

Djelika's story

Mrs. Djélika is 52 years old. She is married with three children and she lives with her husband and children in the Kôkô quarter of the prefecture of Koutiala (Sikasso region). She stopped her studies early on then went into money making activities. After several unsuccessful jobs, she ended up over nine years ago taking up the commerce of firewood. Wood is one of the essential elements in cooking for the Mali women, which is why Mrs. Djélika can sell up to three cartloads per month. With the winter coming, which is the period when there is little stock, she did not take the time to return to the Soro Yiriwaso micro-finance institution with whom she is on her fourth loan in order to avoid this shortage over two years ago. Mrs. Djélika plans to use this loan for the purchase of cartloads of firewood in the villages around Koutiala. She sells the wood outside her home in the Kôkô quarter for cash to a mixed clientele. With this loan in addition to her capital stock, she plans to make an average monthly profit of 150 000FCFA which she will use to repay the interest to Soro, participate in the daily expenditure of her family, and the remainder she will re-invest in her activity.
