A loan of $5,775 helped a member to purchase cook stoves and solar lanterns for sale.

Githagara Women Group's story

Mary, Hellen and Selina are leaders of Githagara Women Group, which is based in Kiambu. They have been with VEP for the last four years. They are dairy farmers who provide income to support their families. They borrowed the first loan to buy cook stoves to distribute to their village. This idea worked out well for them as they were able to make a profit of around $2000 with 70 stoves. With the profit, they paid back the loan and expanded their business stall. They have approached VEP for a second loan that will help them purchase more cook stoves and solar lanterns to stock their stall. This will help them create more awareness of energy-saving Jikos that are cost effective and environment friendly. They also hope to target families using kerosene to upgrade them to solar lamps that will help their children study longer
