A loan of $850 helped to set-up a permanent pig shelter and purchase a solar kit.

John's story

John - 68, is a farmer in Bwetyaba Village - Kayunga District in Uganda. He owns a 7 acre coffee plantation. For 40 years, John has run and managed this farm. Like so many farmers in his community, however, John’s biggest challenge has been in dealing with drought. The repercussion of drought has always been heavy for John to bear. Especially for a grandfather taking care of a 16 year old, school-going granddaughter, John’s worries have been how to maintain a stable monthly income.

To level-out his income, John established a pig rearing enterprise 4 years back and his wife makes local organic fruit wine. John currently owns over 25 pigs. He has saved enough income to expand his farm to 100 piglets. However, the current pig shelter is not only limiting, it is not secure enough to protect his piglets from wild animals that prey on the piglets in the night.

John, referred to by members of his farmers’ cooperative as highly reliable, is seeking a loan to set-up a permanent pig shelter. Part of the loan will also enable John acquire a solar kit for his household.
