Barhakomera is a member of the 'banc villageois', Yesu ni jibu. She is 36 years old and married to a man who is currently out of work. Together they have five children who all attend school. Barhakomera has been a business woman since 2004, she sells kitchen utensils and saucepans on the street.

Barhakomera will use this new loan to buy a dozen saucepans. She hopes to be able to buy a plot of land for her children. She is grateful to the field partner, Hekima, for the support that they offer to women on very low incomes.

La cliente Barhakomera est membre de la banque villageoise Yesu ni jibu. A 36 ans, elle est mariée à un homme sans emploie et ensemble ils ont 5 enfants qui vont tous à l’école. Femme d’affaire depuis 2004, elle est vendeuse des ustensiles de cuisine et de casseroles dans la rue. Avec ce nouveau crédit, elle va acheter une douzaine de casserole. Ainsi, elle souhaite acheter une parcelle pour ses enfants et remercie Hekima d’appuyer les femmes à bas revenu.

HEKIMA is a microfinance institution headquartered in Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), with branch offices in Goma and Bukavu. HEKIMA aims to contribute to the transformation of the economic, social, and spiritual lives of the economically active poor of the DRC. To this end, HEKIMA provides its clients with solidarity group loans to support income-generating activities. Despite ongoing instability and violence in its operating areas, HEKIMA continues to keep its doors open and provide credit and savings services for its over 90% female clientele.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
