A loan of $850 helped to buy basic food products to sell at her grocery stand.

Sandra Carlota's story

Sandra Carlota T., 37, married, was born in the city of Maputo, Mozambique. She's the mother of three children, ages 18, 15 and 10, all enrolled in school.

Her studies were interrupted in 11th grade, when she got pregnant with her first child. She and her partner have been together since 1989 and own their own house. She's learned how to run a business with her grandmother, who used to sell shellfish at one of the markets on the outskirts of Maputo.

Sandra helps support her family, and her mother, by selling basic food products from home, an activity that gives her a monthly net income of about 28.000,00 MT and allows her to save some money. The bulk of her profit comes from selling peanuts, which she buys bulk for 1.950,00 MT a bag, and resells for 2,500,00 MT. Sandra's business is the main source of the family's income.

She heard about Hvuluku through a friend, and this is the first time she's applying for credit. She is confident that this loan will help her improve her business, serve her clients better, and save more money. Sandra's dream is to remodel her house and to see her children graduate from college.
