A loan of $1,075 helped a member to buy pagnes.

Benkan Group's story

The 4 members of the Benkan group are married women with an average age of 35 and, on average, 4 children. Most of them live in traditional families in Ouayerma I, one of the popular districts of Sikasso town, in the 3rd administrative region of Mali. They are on their 7th group loan with the MFI Soro Yiriwaso in order to be able to satisfy their customers' needs. Afou, standing on second on the left in the picture, is the group member who sells wax pagnes (highly colourful and decorative West African fabric). She plans to use her loan to buy 20 pieces of wax pagne fabric at the Grand Market so that she can resell it locally to a retail clientèle made up of men and women for cash or credit. She expects to make an average monthly profit of 35 000 francs, part of which will be used to repay the loan and its interest and part of which will be saved.
