Sokhom's story

Mrs. Sokhom T., 53, and her husband, Mr. Lon Hong, 64, who live on an Island in Mekong River about fifteen kilometers from Phnom Penh, were married in 1970 and have five children, two sons and three daughters. One son was married and lives outside the family home. Two daughters are assisting their mother in her grocery business. One son does farming, and the youngest daughter has full-time employment.


Mrs. Sokhom has been a grocery seller since 1980. She buys her supplies from the market in Phnom Penh for resale at her home. Her husband grows papayas, tomatoes, corns, and food crops on their farmland. Mrs. Sokhum is requesting a loan of $700 to purchase one motorbike for her daughter to drive to work.
