A loan of $1,500 helped a member to reduce the burden of water-borne diseases by providing access to safe drinking water via chlorine dispensers.

Jane Muhonja's Group's story

Jane is 35 years old, has 2 children and lives in Idumbu village, Vihiga County, Kenya. Idumbu village does not have a piped water supply so the community collects their water from a protected spring. This water is easily contaminated with bacteria that can cause diarrhea and other water-borne diseases, meaning that Jane and her family may fall sick at any time and become unable to work or attend school.

Jane works as a taxi operator but has also volunteered her time to be the promoter for a new chlorine dispenser program that enables her community to drink safe water and stay healthy. Jane and other promoters in her community, including Janet, Dorcillah, Mutinda and Wyclief, need a loan to cover the costs of installing and maintaining chlorine dispensers at the water sources in the area. Jane will encourage the community to treat their water with the dispenser and will also be responsible for refilling the dispenser with chlorine as needed. Jane wants to be the promoter because her community trusts her and she believes that the chlorine dispenser will kill germs and make their water safe, hence preventing water-borne diseases.

Evidence Action (www.evidenceaction.org) will repay the Kiva loan on behalf of the community through the sale of carbon credits. Using the chlorine dispenser generates carbon credits by avoiding the need to boil water to make it safe to drink. Revenues from the sale of carbon credits to organizations and individuals wanting to reduce world carbon footprint will be used to repay Kiva lenders and to make sure that Jane’s community can have access to safe water now and in the future.
