A loan of $5,275 helped a member to purchase hybrid seeds and fertilizer for the cultivation of maize, millet, and sorghum.

Fanuel's Group's story

Fanuel is a member of Imani Group in Busia District. He is pictured here in a group of six One Acre Fund group leader farmers. The group leaders represent a total of 85 individual One Acre Fund farmers who are not pictured here. Fanuel has been selected to act as the Kiva group representative and is standing on the right with his hand raised. He and the other farmers in this group are each receiving seeds to plant ¼ acre of maize and ¼ acre of sorghum or millet. Each farmer is receiving an average input loan of 5,349 KES for maize, millet and sorghum cultivation.

The 2013 Long Rains season will be Fanuel’s first season with One Acre Fund. He joined this year in order to earn enough to feed his family. As an active member in his community, Fanuel also volunteered his time to be a group leader and Kiva representative because he was proposed by other members in his group. Fanuel plans on using his future profits from his harvest to send his children to school. He believes that his life will improve by working with One Acre Fund because he will be able to feed his family.

One Acre Fund focuses on working with smallholder farmers across Kenya. The organization pre-purchases seeds and fertilizer when prices are low and passes the cost savings onto the farmers. Fanuel and the Imani Group will use the Kiva loan to cover the initial cost of purchasing the seeds and fertilizer package from One Acre Fund. One Acre Fund continues to provide training and support throughout the planting and harvesting season to ensure a good harvest and repayment. With support from One Acre Fund and your loan, these farmers will have a chance at a successful harvest, increased profits and improved lives.

The field officer is also included in the photo and is standing on the left of the photo.
