A loan of $1,500 helped to buy agricultural supplies and to pay workers to help her cultivate coffee.

Reina America's story

With the economic help from the COMIXMUL cooperative and Kiva lenders, Reina was able to buy various supplies to provide her coffee plants with the necessary maintenance and care: 3 QQ (quintales or hundred pounds) of urea, 3 QQ of coffee fertilisation formula 12-24-12, 2 bags of fertilisers, 3 litres of fungicide, 3 litres of insecticide and 3 litres of leaf plant fertiliser. Reina sold the coffee on to someone in the community who works in purchasing, and he in his turn resold the produce to stores sited in other parts of the department and used exclusively for the buying and selling of coffee. She was able to meet her loan repayments with the money she earned.

Currently, she is asking for a second loan that she will invest in buying fertilisers and urea as well as for paying workers to prepare and clear the ground for her coffee plants. This is really important in order to avoid weed growth and plant deterioration. Reina feels that the loan will help her to maintain her plantation better, and thus make her product more attractive and appealing for sale, which will in turn lead to a better income when sold.
