A loan of $4,500 helped a member to purchase hybrid seed and fertilizer for the cultivation of maize, millet and sorghum.

Magdaline's Group's story

Magdaline, 52, is married and has five children (she is standing on the right with her hand raised). She is known as a friendly and hardworking woman. In the past three years she has become an experienced farmer. She is active in her community, belonging to such groups as a women's group, prayer group and burial committee.

Magdaline is a member of this One Acre Fund, or OAF, group in Busia District. She and the seven others pictured here are OAF group leaders (the field officer is standing on the left). These leaders represent a total of 72 OAF farmers. She and the other farmers belonging to this group will each receive ¼ acre’s worth of maize seed and ¼ acre’s worth of millet or sorghum seed, plus fertilizer.

Magdaline joined OAF in order to get the best price on seed, learn new farming methods and earn enough to feed her family. She also volunteered to be a group leader and Kiva representative because she wants to help more farmers and spread the story about OAF farmers. She received help through OAF last year but did not get as desirable a yield as she would have liked. She believes, however, that she can have a better harvest this year by continuing to work with OAF.

Magdaline and her group are applying for a 385,128 KES loan to cover the initial cost of purchasing seed and fertilizer through OAF. It pre-purchases seed and fertilizer when prices are low and passes the savings on to the farmers. On average they will receive a loan of 5,349 KES each. Throughout the planting and harvesting season, OAF also provides training and support to the farmers as they make payments back to OAF. The Fund will also repay the members’ Kiva loan out of the farmers’ profits.

Magdaline plans to use the money she earns from her next harvest to send her children to school and save for the future. She notes that working with OAF has led to many benefits for its farmers. With support from OAF and your Kiva loan, farmers such as Magdaline will have a chance at a successful harvest, increased profits and improved lives.
