A loan of $1,625 helped to buy sewing machines to set up her workshop.

Marlene Karina's story

Marlene is a 28 year-old woman who has a 5 year-old daughter. They live in a rented house in the city of Santo Domingo, a very commercial zone with a pleasant climate. Marlene is a very hard-working woman. She has been a seamstress for the past ten years and has provided her services to a company that makes shirts.

Now Marlene wants to set up her own shop and has approached Fundacion Alternativa because she doesn't have the money to buy sewing machines. She has a small amount of money saved up because this has been her dream for a long time, and bit by bit she has been able to scrape together this money. But it is not enough to buy the necessary machines for the shop. A loan has helped Marlene start up her new business. She is very happy and feels very grateful to Fundacion Alternativa and Kiva because many other institutions didn't believe in her dream and closed their doors to her. Now, with the Fundacion, her dream is a reality and she was able to buy three machines and has already begun to make her first pieces of clothing. This will allow her to grow professionally and raise her family.
