A loan of $800 helped buy a cow, materials to make roof tiles.

Eleuteria Isabel's story

Mrs. Eleuteria Isabel Z. E. is 52 years old and lives on Primavera Avenue in the Mache District of Otuzco Province in the La Libertad Department of Peru. Eleuteria completed primary school, but could not continue her education because her parents were very poor and could not support her any more. When she was 30 years old, she married Mr. Fernando Javier Rafael Vidal, with whom she has two children, one of whom works and is independent, while the other is still in school.

Eleuteria buys and sells quesillo (a soft, mild cheese), vegetables, guinea pigs and hens from her home. She cannot remember how long she has been a client of Manuela Ramos, but she does remember that she used her first loan of 300 soles to buy two pigs and a sheep and repaid the loan in four months. With her current loan of 2300 soles (about $800) she will buy a cow for 1300 soles and will use the remaining 1000 soles to buy materials to make roof tiles.

She dreams of travelling to spend time with her brothers, who live outside Peru. Eleuteria belongs to the Maria Victoria working-class eatery and the Mujeres de Trabajo Communal Bank (a group loan).
